Belarus: residency, citizenship and cost of living
Paths checked against sources: 2026-11
Path to citizenship
Belarusian citizenship comes after 7 years of continuous residence on a permanent residence permit; 5 years for those married to a Belarusian citizen for at least 3 years with a common minor child who is a citizen. The language is Belarusian or Russian (a written test), an oath is required; the law requires giving up foreign citizenship, and acquired citizenship can be revoked, for example for «extremist activity». A permanent residence permit normally comes after 5 years of temporary residence, immediately on marriage to a citizen. Russian citizens get it in a simplified way, but since 9 July 2026 no longer on a rental contract alone — they need a basis (work, family, study). Whether Russian citizens must give up their citizenship we could not officially confirm.
