Colombia: residency, citizenship and cost of living
Paths checked against sources: 2026-10
Path to citizenship
Colombian citizenship comes after 5 continuous years counted from the resident (R) visa; spouses and permanent partners of citizens — after 2 years with an R visa. The R visa itself comes after 5 years on a migrant (M) visa (work, business, pension, etc.) or 3 years on a spouse M visa, so the usual route takes about 10 years. A Spanish and civics exam is required; dual citizenship is allowed. There is no legal deadline for a decision; in practice it takes six months to two years. The digital nomad visa is a visitor (V) visa and does not count towards these periods.
