Croatia: residency, citizenship and cost of living

Paths checked against sources: 2026-11

Path to citizenship

Ordinary Croatian naturalisation comes after 8 years of continuous registered residence with permanent residence (granted after 5 years), an exam in Croatian, the Latin script and culture, and giving up your previous citizenship. A citizen's spouse gets permanent residence after 4 years of family reunification, then citizenship without the 8 years, the language exam or renunciation. People of Croatian origin need no residence period or exam. Time on the digital nomad visa does not count; whether Ukrainians' temporary-protection time counts we could not find — the graph does not count it. Croatia is known for long processing: one to two years or more.

Citizenship application processing, years: 1–2.5.
