Iceland: residency, citizenship and cost of living

Paths checked against sources: 2026-11

Path to citizenship

Icelandic citizenship comes after 7 years of legal registered residence; citizens of countries outside the EEA and the Nordics also need a permanent residence permit (granted after 4 years). You need an Icelandic test () unless exempt, good character and no debts. Spouses of citizens need 4 years of residence after marriage, if the spouse has been a citizen for at least 5 years. Dual citizenship has been allowed since 2003. Remote-work visa time does not count; whether Ukrainians' temporary-protection time counts we could not find — the graph does not count it.
