Israel: residency, citizenship and cost of living
Paths checked against sources: 2026-10
Path to citizenship
The main route to Israel is the Law of Return: Jews, their children and grandchildren (even if not Jewish under religious law) and the spouses of any of them receive citizenship on immigration, keeping their current one; consular processing takes 3–12 months. There are regular attempts to repeal the «grandchild clause» — the latest bill failed in 2025, but the risk remains. Spouses of Israelis outside this law go through a multi-year graduated procedure; we have not confirmed its exact length. For everyone else naturalisation is practically closed and work visas do not lead to status. Young immigrants may be called up for military service depending on age.
