Path to citizenship

Malaysian citizenship comes after 10 of the last 12 years of residence (the last year continuous), from age 21, with Malay and giving up your previous citizenship; in practice permanent resident () status is needed. PR is very hard to get and never automatic: investors with a deposit from USD 2 million, experts on an agency's recommendation (usually after ≈ 5 years of work), professionals by points (65+). A foreign wife of a citizen goes via PR (≈ 5 years on a spouse visa) plus 2 more years; husbands of citizens have no separate route. MM2H and digital nomad visas do not lead to PR. Decisions are discretionary; processing takes 1–3 years.

Citizenship application processing, years: 1–3.
