Switzerland: residency, citizenship and cost of living

Paths checked against sources: 2026-11

Path to citizenship

Ordinary Swiss naturalisation comes after 10 years of residence (3 of the last 5), with a C settlement permit and 2–5 years in the canton. The commune, canton and Confederation all decide; language — at least spoken and A2 written, cantons may ask more; no social assistance in the last 3 years. Non-EU citizens get the C permit after 10 years, EU citizens after 5. Spouses of citizens — facilitated: 5 years of residence and 3 years of marriage, a B permit is enough. Time with S status (protection for Ukrainians), a short-term L permit or as an asylum seeker does not count. Dual citizenship is allowed. Processing takes 1–3 years; fees depend on the canton and commune.

Citizenship application processing, years: 1–3.
