Thailand: residency, citizenship and cost of living

Path to citizenship

Thailand is one of the hardest countries for citizenship. First you need 3 consecutive years of work on a non-immigrant visa with a work permit, then selection for permanent residence (a quota of 100 people per nationality a year, applications only in October–December), 5 years on it, Thai language and enough points. A citizenship application takes 2 years officially and 3–5 in practice. Spouses of citizens have a shorter route. Remote-work (), retirement and visas do not lead to permanent residence. Dual citizenship is a grey zone: the law does not ban it outright, but applicants sign a statement of intent to give up their old one, and in 2026 one person lost Thai citizenship for using their former passport.

Citizenship application processing, years: 2–5.
