United Kingdom: residency, citizenship and cost of living

Paths checked against sources: 2026-11

Path to citizenship

On 2 November 2026 the government confirmed «earned settlement»: the baseline wait for indefinite leave to remain becomes 10 years instead of 5; 5 years remain for partners of British citizens and public-service workers (doctors, teachers, nurses), 3 years for high earners and entrepreneurs, 15–20 years for those who received benefits. It is not yet in the Immigration Rules: changes are expected from December 2026 and through 2027, and is usually decided under the rules on the date of decision — so the new periods will likely also affect people already in the UK. Timelines are shown as a range, from the current rules to the announced ones. Already in the rules: from 26 March 2027 ILR requires English. Ukrainian schemes do not lead to permanent residence. Dual citizenship is allowed.
