Uruguay: residency, citizenship and cost of living

Paths checked against sources: 2026-10

Path to citizenship

Uruguay's «legal citizenship» comes after 3 years of residence if you have family in the country (a spouse or children), or after 5 years without family; you need an occupation, capital or property, good conduct and witnesses, and must live in the country at least 183 days a year. The time counts from arrival, not from the residence permit. Dual citizenship is allowed and there is no language test. A catch: a naturalised citizen's passport still shows the country of birth as «nationality», and some countries refuse such passports; a law to fix this has been introduced but not yet passed. The Electoral Court is overloaded — processing takes six months or more.

Citizenship application processing, years: 0.5–1.5.
